Water - Ruling Element of Winter Yoga

As the winter season wraps its arms around us, we enter the final chapter of our journey through the five elements of Taoist Yoga and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

We've explored the Wood element's inspiration, the Fire element's joyous intensity, the Earth element's grounding stability, and the Metal element's self-reflective wisdom. Now, we dive into the deep waters of the Water element, the ruling energy of winter.

In the realm of the elements, Water symbolizes adaptability and resilience. While we all like to think we easily "go with the flow," for the dominant Water element personality, it's actually true!

Read on to explore and understand how the Water elements manifest in your personality and yoga practice, and why it matters.

Water Element Personality Traits

Those who resonate strongly with the Water element possess remarkable qualities, including:

  • Determination: Like water's persistent ability to carve through rock over time, Water-dominant individuals are known for their unwavering determination and strong will.

  • Adaptability: Much like water's ability to find its way around obstacles and change course as needed, those with a strong Water element are remarkably adaptable to change.

  • Calmness: When life throws unexpected storms their way, Water-dominant personalities remain calm and composed. They can adapt to any circumstances, maintaining their ease and dependability even in challenging times, under pressure.

  • Self-Confidence: In a balanced state, Water element personalities exude self-confidence, courage, independence, and self-sufficiency.

A Self-Discovery Quiz

Seasonal Quiz Time!

Discovering Water, the Element of Winter

To determine if the Water element flows dominantly within you,

ponder these five questions:

1. Solitude Seeker: Do you find comfort and crave alone time for self-reflection?

2. Go with the Flow: Are you at ease when others take the lead and direct you?

3. Visionary: Do you have a clear vision for your life's purpose and future?

4. Empathic Impact: Are you particularly sensitive to others' feelings and emotions?

5. Confidence in Self: Is your self-confidence intact, even when faced with challenges?

If you answered "yes" to most of these questions, you likely possess a dominant Water element in your personality.

Personalities with a strong water element tend to be are easy-going, perceptive, with a natural ability to empathize with others, qualities which make you less judgemental than other elemental personalities. With a balanced Water element in your nature, you'll enjoy a strong sense of purpose, self-worth, and self-confidence. You work well with others, yet enjoy and are recharged by time alone.

Out of balance, these same qualities can make you fearful, overly sensitive, and withdrawn.

You may become riddled with self-doubt and second guess your decisions. When you find this happening, tap into people and activities that you love and trust. Water element personalities often discover that laughter and connection to others, Fire element qualities, can be the best medicine to thaw insecurities and get you going with flow again.

Balance Your Water Element in Winter Yoga Practice

Now, let's explore how the Water element influences your yoga practice.

If you resonate with Water, your yoga journey may exhibit the following traits:

  • Patience and Long-Term Vision: You approach your practice with patience, setting long-term goals and diligently working toward them.

  • Transformation: You're drawn to the transformative aspects of yoga, continuously seeking growth, and reaching new levels in your practice.

  • Meditative Flow: You effortlessly enter the "zone" during yoga, meditation, or any spiritual practice.

  • Solitary Retreat: Your mat becomes a sanctuary for solace, allowing you to reconnect with yourself and recalibrate your energy.

A dominant Water element yoga practice is characterized by the ability to get into "the zone" or meditative state of your practice. Water element yogis often love a slow flow and enjoy the grounding experience of being connected and at ease in the body, a feeling yoga evokes. And naturally empathic, Water element dominant yogis can really be recharged by solitary mat time to clear your head and reconnect with your own physicality.

Out of balance, Water element yogis can feel disconnected from their physical form. In these moments, seek grounding postures and deliberate, slow sequences that allow you to fully inhabit each pose before transitioning to the next.

In Closing

The Water element embodies self-actualization, granting us the power to adapt, soften our approach, and gracefully navigate life's twists and turns. Like water, this element guides us to approach challenges with flexibility, determination, and patience. Understanding who we are and how we want to manifest ourselves in the world is powered by our Water nature.

In closing, let's draw inspiration from 11th century Taoist scholar Tao Cheng:

"Water is yielding but all-encompassing. Water extinguishes Fire, or finding itself likely to be defeated, escapes as steam and reforms. Water washes away soft Earth, or when confronted by rocks, seeks a way round. Water corrodes Iron until it crumbles to dust... For no power can prevent it following its destined course to the sea."

As you embark on your yoga journey, embrace the depth and resilience of your Water element. Dive in, flow with life, and allow your practice to shape you into the person you're destined to be.

Thanks for reading! Stay tuned for more elemental wisdom and inspiration.
